Simply Solids Bee

I just mailed out my second bee block. I joined this group back in December and finished the first block last week, and finally found the time to take a photo.

This bee may be my favorite yet, we are using only solids. Again this bee is challenging to me, because I love my pattern. But, it is teaching me how to visualize a quilt design in a totally different way. This block was super fun (I kind of want it myself now!) It's from the Quick Quilts Feb/Mar issue, and by this blogger here: happyquiltingmelissa.blogspot.com/2012/12/hip-to-be-squar...

The colors are a little off, but it's still a great range of color.

Grandma's Quilt

I have always loved patchwork quilts....But, not as much as I love this one.

Grandma Wiley made the quilt top years ago, and Patrick's mom passed it on to me this past year. I wasn't sure how to begin quilting a double-knit quilt top. We (Mom and I) decided that hand tying the quilt was the best way to go. It's just as Grandma Wiley would have done it. I picked up the floss to hand tie, the backing and batting, and got to work.

I spent an entire day basting this quilt (96x96). Of course, I had some help from the 'Quilty Cat'. It was a great afternoon. This process is not my favorite part, but with this quilt I really did enjoy it.

For the binding I used the 'cheating method,' I just brought the back over to the front and mitered the corners like a pro!

This quilt was so much fun to complete. It was great knowing that I helped complete something Grandma Wiley made. We have a few quilts she made and we love them dearly, but I love this one the most-because it's 'our quilt'.
